I've been told that during the 1920's, 30's and 40's that big bands used to play in a ballroom up top of the Peabody Hotel. They would broadcast live radio from there. You can almost imagine the feel of that hotel in "The Shining". Lots of history at the Peabody. Guys would come from New York City in the 20's and 30's with wire recorders (before tape) in hopes of recording some of the Memphis blues talent that was surfacing from the juke joints and cotton fields of Mississippi just south of Memphis. |
