The Bands

Back in the 60's, fellow musicians Joe Torres, Izzy Alvarado, Willie Stone and I, ended up playing with a local bandleader named Al Ward. I don't remember the circumstances, but Willie had played in one of Al's bands before. Al was a front man/ singer, who also played saxophone and booked gigs. He had been a bandleader for a number of years in the Modesto/Turlock area and ALWAYS had great bands. We began doing a few gigs as Al Ward and the Epics. We played clubs in Visalia, Fresno and Los Banos, California.

Al Ward and the Epics

In one of my more ignorant moves, I had acquired a fake I.D. in Tijuana, Mexico when I was about 15, so I could get into bars to play music. We were playing the Los Banos gig, which was a small bar, and this was the first time I had tried to use it. Needless to say, I got busted. Yes, busted. I looked even younger than my age. The I.D. was so bad that anyone looking at it would know it wasn't a real California drivers license. The judge was lenient on me when I told him why I had done it. He took the I.D. away, gave me a small fine ($35.00, I believe), then told me that I couldn't play at that bar in the area where they served booze. So, here's what I did: Directly behind the bandstand was an open area where they stored all the delivered booze for the club. It was, in fact, out of the serving area. I continued to play the gig, but with a long guitar cord leading back off the stage to a beer box in the back, where I would sit and play guitar. I did this for the remaining week of the gig. Somehow, I slipped through that one without getting in too much trouble. It did end my phony I.D. days, that's for sure.

Willie Stone (organ), Joe Torres (drums), Al Ward (sax and lead vocal) & Israel Alvarado on bass and trumpet.   I was out of view with a 20' cord in the back.

I'd sneak up to the back of the bandstand to find out from Izzy what the next song would be, then head back to my position, sitting on a couple of cases of beer.

After this gig, Al got us a booking at a casino in Lake Tahoe. This was definitely a step up the ladder, so we loaded the U-Haul trailer and headed up into the Sierra's to Lake Tahoe, NV.

Izzy Alvarado and me. That's my Fender Broadcaster, serial #0352. It was stolen when we were in Tahoe.

Los Banos, CA., circa late 1966 or early 1967. Yours truly doing a "daffy," but the cameraman was late. Note my bad 1959 Chevy. 1967uhauldaffy.jpg
