Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers in Texas, 2001.

Phil and his brother Don are truly one of the greatest duos ever. They helped shape the very roots of rock & roll as we know it. As I mentioned earlier in this book, I was singing Everly Brother songs before I even picked up a guitar. Such great harmonies and great songs. They influenced us all, including the Beatles. Those guys are definitely a couple of my music heroes. No doubt about it.

I was disappointed that I didn't get to meet them at the gig, but they left quite briskly in a limo. When I returned to the hotel, I stopped by the lounge, and who do I see walking towards me with a pizza in his hand? Phil! I looked him in the eye and said, "I didn't know the Everlys delivered." He laughed and then I hammered him for leaving so quickly from the gig before I got a chance to say hello. It made my night. God, they sounded terrific. How would you like to go on stage following the Everly Brothers? That's what we did, and had a great show, but we were well aware of who had just left the stage.

Felix Cavalieri

With great keyboardist / singer / songwriter, Felix Cavaliere of "The Rascals." We've done a number of concerts together. I used to play their songs in groups I played in before 3 Dog Night. Felix is probably best known for being the former organist/vocalist of the Rascals and co-writing the hit song "Groovin'" with Eddie Brigati, but he has written a lot more. Too many to list, really. He proves my theory that "the really good ones are nice people, too." It's the "almosts" that tend to have their heads up their butts. I'm pretty jaded as far as being impressed with other entertainers, but on occasion I'm just like a kid. Such was the case meeting Felix. The same goes for Phil Everly, too. I love it.

Did I hear someone mention Texas?
